Important Tip: Prepare For The Windows 8.1 Update

On October 17, 2013 the Windows 8.1 update was released. If you are planning on updating your OS to the latest version, pay attention to our Tip of the Week. How can you update the OS correctly if you have Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 installed? What version should be installed on the updated OS? What should you do if you already have a box version without an update required for compatibility with Windows 8.1?

1)    In one of our previous tips we explained how to configure the update settings for Kaspersky products. If you have the Automatic update mode enabled, the update package responsible for compatibility with new Windows 8.1 must be installed on your Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 automatically a week before the OS update.

If you are not sure if the update package was installed (for example, your computer was off, and/or there was no Internet connection, or Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 was not run for a long time) to work under the new OS version, update Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 manually before starting the update to Windows 8.1:

1. Select Update in the program’s main window.

2. Click Update in the opened window and wait until the process is completed.

Now you can update to Windows 8.1.

2)    If you have already updated to Windows 8.1 and are now planning to install Kaspersky Internet Security, Kaspersky Lab specialists recommend installing the latest version of Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 on Windows 8.1. You can purchase / download the installation package of the product on the Kaspersky Lab website. Updates for USA, Brazil, Russia, UK, France and Germany will be published on the Kaspersky Lab website on October 22-23. Updates for remaining countries will be published during October-November 2013.

3)    If you have purchased a box version of Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 or downloaded the product from the eStore before the release of the required updates, then, while installing your version on Windows 8.1, the Installation wizard will find and download the necessary version, and the installation will continue as usual.

  1. what about the pure 3.0 commercial users? wil the kasper sky replace the pure 3.0 with a compatible product by digital delivary? otherwise ,in coming years, when the windows 8.1 popularises, kaspersky will loose its valuble customers.

    • If you already have Pure 3.0 and Windows 8 installed on your system you can do the following.

Update Pure 3.0, which now includes Patch C:
After updating, you can upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1 and you will then be compatible with Pure 3.0.

If you do not already have Pure 3.0 on your computer, you will be able install it on top of Windows 8.1 in December when our new build is released.

If you don’t wish to wait until December, there is a workaround for this.
      Install Windows 8.0
      Install Pure 3.0
Update databases, reboot your system , and ensure patch C is applied
      Upgrade to Windows 8.1

Please let us know if you have any questions.

      • I am on Windows 8.1. My KIS 2013 Dutch language expires within 3 weeks. Currently I am on the KIS 2014 english version which apparently works but if the dutch language will not be available on time I will have to switch to an alternative. I hope I can stay with Kaspersky.

          • Today december 6 I downloaded the dutch KIS 2014 since on the multi-device webpage it states compatible with Windows 8.1 Pro. When I tried to install it I got the message that it was not compatible with my system!!!!!???? I get the feeling that you do not take things seriously. I will switch to an alternative since I am out of a good protection already for 5 weeks now. My current license for KIS 2013 expires within 2 weeks from now.

          • Hi Rein,

Do you have Window’s preview version installed or the final release? KIS2014 with Patch B can be directly installed on top of Windows 8.1 final release.

          • Hi Daily,

I am wondering what you guys are doing. You do not really respond to the questions raised. Is this a delaying tactic just to buy some time?

For your understanding, because of all the problems i decided to do a fresh install with the latest Windows 8.1 64 Pro (so no update). I used the KIS2013 with no problems on Windows 8.0 Pro. The KIS2014 and the Pur3 3.0 both work on my current system with no problems at (as far as I know). Actually I am in favour of the Pure 3.0 because it still has very much the same interface as the KIS2013. The KIS2014 interface is changed and less accessable than it used to be. As i said i prefer a dutch working version. I tried them both after dec 6th but they both failed to install, both with the message they were not compatible with my OS.

          • Hi Rein,

We apologize for the confusion here. We’ve been notified of some additional issues with the builds and are working as quickly as possible to implement the needed adjustments. We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience. We do appreciate your feedback though so thank you for reaching out and making us aware of the issues you’ve faced with both products.

  2. None of Kaspersky’s products load on to new Windows 8.1 (public release) the article above is not accurate in that respect.

    • Hi Harrison,

We are diligently working to get all of our products fully compatible with Windows 8.1. Currently some of our products (KIS2014 and Pure 3.0) offer patches that will enable you to support an upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1. KIS2014 will have new build released shortly that will allow for a direct install, and Pure 3.0 will have a build out in December. KIS2013 will have an integrated patch available by the middle of November and we’re also hoping to have a new build for KPM5 out soon. At this time, if you are using KES10 you will need to ensure it’s uninstalled on your system prior to upgrading to Windows 8.1 as it’s not yet compatible. We appreciate your patience while we get these new releases out to you. Please let us know if you have any questions.

      • A question. I just purchased a new laptop from Future Shop a week ago and they indicated the compatibility issue with your software and Windows 8.1. I had paid to have them install all the software I purchased, however they failed to be able to install your software and advised that Microsoft was looking for a solution. In your response to Harrison, you indicate that Pure 3.0 (which I purchased) would have a build out in December to resolve the issue. So I am wondering if the solution is actually coming from your company and not Microsoft. If this is the case is the version of Pure 3.0 that I just purchased going to work when the new build comes out in December. Susan

  3. Am from India …and am thinking about getting the kaspersky internet security 2014 …currently using win 8.1 it compatible with it…plz reply…it would be of gr8 help if u do!!!! 🙂 🙂

    • Hi Debjit,

Currently Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 is not compatible with Windows 8.1, but we’re hoping to have a new build released very shortly that will make it compatible. Please stay tuned as it will be announced on our website as soon as it’s out.

    • Hi Muhsin,

Currently you cannot install Pure 3.0 directly onto Windows 8.1. However, we hope to have a new build released that will make this possible in December. If you don’t want to wait until December, you can use the following workaround:

      Install Windows 8.0
      Install Pure 3.0
Update databases, reboot your system , and ensure patch C is applied (Patch C allows you to upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1 while remaining compatible with Pure 3.0)
      Upgrade to Windows 8.1

Please let us know if you have any questions.

      • I made the big mistake of upgrading from Windows 8 to 8.1 without reading this, I never thought it would be a problem with kaspersky 2.0. What should I do now? PLLEAAASE ADVISE.

  4. And for those who bought Kaspersky Endpoint Security 10?
When will be available Kaspersky Endpoint Security for Windows 8.1?
We are waiting again a few months?

  5. Unfortunately it is not true. I updated to Windows 8.1 and I’m not allowed to install the Internet Security on my machine.

    • Hi Anderson,

Which version of Kaspersky Internet Security are you trying to install? If you are working with Kaspersky Internet Security 2014, we do have a Patch B release out that is compatible with Windows 8.1 if you’re performing an upgrade from Windows 8.0: You’ll be able to do a direct install of KIS2014 onto Windows 8.1 after our new build is released in the coming days.

    • Hi Farrokh,

We plan to release a new build in the coming days. We appreciate your patience and apologize for the wait, but we will have the latest product available as soon as possible.

  6. Today I have installed the US version (awaiting Swedish version) of KIS 2014 on my Windows 8.1 Pro build9600. Installation works fine, BUT several Kaspersky components/plugins are NOT compatible with the in-built web browser Internet Explorer 11 (which I tend to use). Windows update has nothing more to update it says, and nor has Kaspersky update. The components/plugins deactivated by Internet Explorer is SafeMoney, url advisor, virtual keyboard and content blocker… – What can you do to help me solve this issue fast as h*ll ? Is this maybe something you are already aware about?
I have also tried Firefox 24.0 – it does not indicate that any Kaspersky plugins are deactivated – but it feels as if they are – for example, the green “browser-safe-money-frame” cannot be seen.

Are you folks at Kaspersky going to be this late every time Microsoft releases a major update (8.1 announced in early 2013 if I am correct) then maybe I will return to my former protection company (which are said to be fully compatible with 8.1 since “long ago”), though it would be sad upon my existing Kaspersky license…

    • Hi Johan,

We will be releasing Patch C on November 5th, which will solve all compatibility issues. We apologize for any inconvenience this is causing in the meantime, we understand your frustrations. Please let us know if we can help you with anything else.

  7. Exactly what day in November will KIS2013 be ‘fully integrated’? “Mid November” is not accurate enough.

What risks do I have by running KIS2013 and win8.1 between today and that date?

Do you have plans to issue a quick update to address the ‘slow right click in the Desktop’ bug that seems to be a result of KIS2013?

    • Hi Byron,

We don’t have an exact date to give you just yet, but we will let you know as soon as we do. In the meantime, there are no risks associated with running KIS2013 on Windows 8.1, but we do recommend upgrading to KIS2014. You can find instructions on migrating from 2013 to 2014 here: Please let us know if we can help you with anything else.

  8. I installed windows 8.1 and my Kaspersky icon disappeared from the toolbar – am I still protected?? I tried installing Kaspersky 3.0 but says its incompatible?? so what do I do now??

    • Hi Peter,

Currently Pure 3.0 is not compatible with Windows 8.1, but we hope to have a new build released in December that will be. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause in the meantime.

  9. I am using win 8.1 pro os. The issue is while installing KAV 13/14 its getting a error report that “OS not supported” !!
Plz help me regarding this issue.

  10. What about my PURE 3.0 license? when im not using it, it still runing? i had pure 3.0 and i didnt download the patch c, and i downoaded Windows 8.1, obviously i cant use pure now and i have to wait december to download the direct installer for 8.1…and im using a KIS2014 trial, but thats another problem, i can use the trial for only 1 month, when the trial expires what i will be able to do untill pure for 8.1 is available?

    • Hi Alonso,

We will be releasing a build with the integration of Patch C by the middle of November, which will make Pure 3.0 compatible with Windows 8.1 We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

  11. hi I am from India, I am using kis2013 , I upgraded to windows 8.1 pro, but my kis2013 licence going to expire in 7 days, so I bought fresh cd of kis2014. but I am not able to install it on windows 8.1 pro. Any Help??

  12. Hi. I just bought a Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 and when I tried to instal it on my laptop which has Windows 8.1, it failed to instal the software saying that the OS is not compatible. I am unable to use the software CD and have now to depend on Windows Defender. Please let me know how to instal the CD and activate the program

    • Hi Alex,

We anticipate a comprehensive Maintenance Release to our Kaspersky Endpoint Security in December 2013 that includes Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 compatibility. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

  13. Hey I am getting quite annoyed with the fact that I have bought 3 of your KIS2013 for 2 years and I cannot use it on my windows 8.1 pro ( I did get the RTM so I understand not having support till its a full release but it has been a full release since the 17 of October). If it is a question of region I am New Zealand.
And I have to rely on avast free antivirus. It had windows 8.1 support from day 1.
So how come a paid antivirus like Kaspersky Internet Security cannot come with a installer in time.
I am really not happy since I paid for your product and it has been almost a (month since the proper release and I cannot use what I paid for.)

  14. So,

I’ve just installed Windows 8.1 and I now have to wait with no security protection until December because I made the decision to buy Pure 3.0?

    Are you having a laugh?

No – don’t tell me the workaround is to install windows 8. I ALREADY HAVE 8.1 INSTALLED.

Are you going to pay for an IT professional to fix my PC when it gets attacked from the internet, as it inevitably will do?

    • Hi Paul,

We’re sincerely sorry for this inconvenience. We’re working diligently to release a compatible product to you as soon as possible.

  15. Sir
Kaspersky internet security 2014 plugins are not working in google chrome.. it’s showing “NPAPI plugins not supported””… kindly help

  16. i have bought KIS CD in india after upgrading to win8.1. now when i try to install via cd, it says that the version is incompatible. how could i proceed if i dont want to wait any further.thanks.

  17. I have purchased a new device which came with windows 8.1 and was recommended pure 3.0 by the retailer JB Hi FI in Australia I now find out that its not compatible. I have spoken to your support team on Tuesday the 29th of Oct and was told that he would e-mail me a patch link to fix the install problem on Thursday 31st Oct and haven’t heard from him yet and now I find out that I’m not going to get a patch until sometime in Dec. I run building sites and I’m on the internet constantly and sending and receiving e-mails all cay what am I supposed to do for protection until SOMETIME IN DECEMBER. should have stuck with NORTAN

    • Hi Ben,

We’re incredibly sorry for the inconvenience this has caused you. Our tech support team has had an unusually high number of requests recently and they will reach out as soon as they can. Your issue is very important to us, so again, we’re very sorry and appreciate your patience.

      • Beste kaspersky team,

        Gr brian

        • Hi Brian,

We’re sorry to hear you’re having difficulties using Windows 8.1. Which of our products do you have installed on your system?

  18. I have the KS Pure 3.0 version which is not compatible after I upgraded to Win 8.1. How is Kaspersky Labs taking ownership and accountability for a product that is not functional and I have paid you the money get the license? Would you be extending the licenses free for the 2 or 3 months as a gesture? What about the risk of your valuable data and PC being exposed to threats and attacks? Doesm’t this call for a class action law suit against you guys?

  19. re-installed windows 8.1 on a laptop and none of the Aus versions of Kaspersky Internet Security (2013 and 2014) have worked. US version worked but my activation code does not work with it. What has kaspersky being doing! This is absolute incompetency of the highest order. Where can i download a AU compatible version or when will a working version be released?

  20. I’ve been a loyal customer for kaspersky. In other word, I paid the license from October 18 – December for nothing, will we get extended period time for 2 months, this is definitely kaspersky problem, not user problem.

    • Hi Espen,

As soon as we have an official release date we will have it posted on our website. We apologize for the inconvenience and wait.

  21. Hi Kaspersky team – The Pure 3.0 was already installed when I upgraded to Win 8.1. Obviously there was no notification or communication or even a warning prior to installation from Kaspersky labs. Did you mention that this has been fixed now? Also you have not answered my question on extending the license till the time it is inoperational as it is currently on my PC.

  22. Will this Patch C apply directly on to Win 8.1. Obviously many like me cannot do a fresh install for Win 8 Pro, then apply Patch C and then upgrade to 8.1. If that is the plan and path you guys have taken, it is a major concern and I bet I will forever abandon KSky for life. You guys do not deserve my business. I guess many are thinking along those lines if not already.

  23. I had internet security 2013, which was updated to internet security 2014 with my license running out within days. I upgraded to windows 8.1 and since I had to renew my license, I decided to go to PURE 3.0. I now get compatibility issues, and since my license is just expiring for internet security 2014 I can’t even use the free trial unless I renew that license and I don’t want to pay for that.
Will Kaspersky PURE be extended for two additional months on my recently purchased license for me. I regret updating to PURE 3.0. How can you help me get protected by Internet security 2014 now meanwhile.

  24. there is some kind of program running with name of lumarleap.exe, some webs are saying that its spyware. i am trying to remove it but its not getting removed. Please help, do kaspersky will help me to remove it?

  25. I also encounter problems with Pure 3.0 and am very disapointed. I am not willing to risk a month an unprotected pc, while I paid for otherwise. Also I am not very keen on using trial versions to overcome the time for an suitable build of Pure. Can’t I get a license for that period for KIS 2014?

  26. We have also update our pc with Windows 8.1 and found out that kaspersky dont support windows 8.1 and that find it very very bad for the user that have bought it and you always said mittle of november and now is it mittle of december for Kaspersky Pure 3.0

When come the release out for us so we can use our pc again ? and what about my licens do i get 2 month more for free or what can you offer for us ?

  27. Before i upgraded to windows 8.1, I was using KAV 13 with 1 year license and now it is not working anymore. After I read posts here, the solution is to install US version of KIS 2014.
I tried to install KIS 2014 but I can’t use my previous license. So that means I have to buy a new license for KAV 2014. That’s not fair. I have already paid for that.
Are you all promoting KIS 14 and making money out of this? The best should be …
    1. My license codes should work on KIS 14 because this is not user fault.
    2. Or else, previous license holders must be able to request a new key for KIS 14 via email providing old license codes and shall continue depending on the remaining days.
    3. To have a free temporary license codes up to the days Kaspersky Team releases a compatibility update. ( meaning that old version users like KAV 12 or 13 can have a temporary license codes in KIS 14 which will last for the days u finished compatibility with previous version.) That makes up your accountability with new updates too.

  28. comprei o karpesky ontem e infelizmente com a atualizacao do windows 8.1 não funcionou. O que fazer? pois paguei 1 ano.

  29. I have windows 8.1 and kav 2014 internet security instaled, the windows action center is telling me my anti-spyware, anti-virus and network firewall are disabled but if i go to the kaspersky control center, its all ok.

  30. Hi there,
I was using Kaspersky pure 2.0 with licence “almost 6 months left” .But last month i installed windows 8.1 and i read about your working to solve the compatibility issue of Kaspersky pure will be released in December .So i just did as you recommended .I installed KIS 2014 trial version while i am waiting you to release the new version of pure 3.0 .But the trial licence of KIS 14 “will expire today” and i dont know what to do to protect my laptop in the next few days.

  31. Hi ,
I am in the same problem like Abdalkader…
I installed windows 8.1 without knowing that it doesn’t support Pure 3.0 version.
I still have a license for Pure 3.0 for 3 computers for additional 6 month. what should I do know?
should I download KIS 2014 or I better wait for the updated version of Pure 3.0 for windows 8.1 ?
    please advise

    • You are really testing my patience. I asked if the Dutch version of Pure 3.0 was also compatible with Windows 8.1. Instead of giving me a functional answer, you just state that the KIS 2014 with Patch B is compatible. That was not what I asked. But for your information, and my irriation, the real answer is no. The English version mentions patches abcd behind the version, the Dutch version doesn’t. Downloading and installing learned that it is still the same version I downloaded at 18th of june 2013. So thank you for waiting my time. And for all, wasting my money, for I was stupid enough to buy the Pure 3.0 license.

      • Hi Ben,

We sincerely apologize for the confusion. The Dutch version of Pure 3.0 became compatible with Windows 8.1 on December 6th.

        • Okay. Well, at least I tried not to response obvious for 20 minutes, but I can’t hold it any longer. I did downloaded and installed the Dutch version of Pure 3.0 and while installing, it halted, stating there was an error occurred with some incompatibility or so. As I mentioned the Dutch version, or the Dutch version willing to be found, did not have the patch id’s (the a b c d behind the version number) while the English version has. Clicking on the link somewhere above here to the “right” version, brought me to the English version on the international section of your website. The same tree location in the Dutch section wouldn’t show a compatible Pure 3.0 version. Therefor I can simply conclude that either you don’t have a compatible Dutch version of Pure 3.0 or that you have, but hide it somewhere on your website. Both options are options that are making me really sad, giving me a not so good emotion about your company. But for all the goods, the English version of Pure 3.0 is working fine. But please, do not react on my reaction, before you have seen, found and tried downloading, installing and working with Dutch Pure 3.0 running on a Dutch windows 8.1 machine.

          • Hi Ben,

We understand your frustration and sincerely apologize for the confusion and inconvenience. We’re happy to hear the English version is working for you properly and do plan to have the Dutch version working properly very shortly. We’ve been notified of some additional issues with the builds and are working as quickly as possible to implement the needed adjustments. We appreciate hearing your feedback and letting us know and again, we apologize.

          • Hi Kaspersky Team, you guys should be so lucky I don’t ask how you are planning to have the Dutch version working properly very shortly, as you earlier said the Dutch version became compatible with Windows 8,1 on December 6th and I stated that the downloadable version on December 9th didn’t work. Imagine how awkward such an answer on my not asked question would be.

          • Hi Ben,

We understand you frustration. As we said, we found additional issues we didn’t anticipate with the build that we’re working on presently to have available to you as soon as possible. We appreciate your patience and again apologize for the inconvenience.

  32. Hi

I am from Mexico and I purchased the kaspersky pure 2.0 software a couple months ago, however when my windows 8 OS was upgraded to 8.1 the kaspersky software stopped working, so I downloaded the 3.0 version from your website, I installed it and it keeps telling me that windows needs to upgrade a couple of components by the end of the installation process and a computer reboot; I have done the reboot more than once and the program still doesn´t run.

Would you be kind enough to give me some advice about my situation?

    Thank you for your time.

    • Hi Diego,

Did the shortcut appear on the Desktop after you rebooted your system? If it did appear, can you start the application manually via shortcut?

  33. i am a user of kav2013 with a 1 year license key. I have formatted my computer and installed windows 8.1. I’m not able to attach my license to KAV2014. my license will expire on 14th may 2015. what should I do?

  34. I have downloaded and installed Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 from the website in Windows 8 Pro 64-bit and activated it. After doing the 1st update completely which is of 125MB. It still says me “Databases are out of date”. Again updating it, it still says me the same. I dont know what might be the issue. Please help me to sort out this issue soon…

    • Hi Mohamed,

Please make sure your system date and time are correct. If you’re still having trouble, please let us know.

  35. Where is the patch for KES 10 for Windows 8.1? You have a lot of upset customers currently, especially since you missed the deadline by a long shot. Please put out a statement to your customers because you guys are looking pretty bad at the moment to many, many businesses.

  36. 37. Hi,
    I have a laptop with win 8.1.
I have purchased a box of Kaspersky Internet Security (Multi-Device) in a store (in Portugal).

Can I Install it, or do I have to do something first?
And will I have to do something after the installation, or will KIS detect all the needed updates?

    • Hi Nuno,

KIS2014 is compatible with Windows 8.1 so you can go ahead and install the product. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

  38. Hi, I am from India. I used to use windows8 and there was Kaspersky anti-virus 2013 installed in my system. Now I had updated my system to windows 8.1, Now I am updating my Kaspersky and it is not getting updated.
